Last Friday we asked you to vote for your favourite Breakfast programme past or present. Our poll follows the news that GMTV will be re-branded as Daybreak in September with new presenters Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles taking the helm. Meanwhile the BBC is planning to shake-up its own programme, Breakfast, by moving production to Salford. So with big changes coming to the world of breakfast television which programme did you, our readers, vote as your favourite?
Well it was another close poll this week but it was a current show that won. BBC Breakfast has taken the crown as your favourite breakfast programme with 30% of the vote. The programme, fronted by Sian Williams and Bill Turnbull beats rivals GMTV, in terms of ratings, hands down with some 1.5 million viewers. While it may be moving to Salford within the next few years it can take comfort in the fact our readers clearly prefer it over past and present formats. In second close though with 28% of the vote was old favourite TV–AM. The legacy of the 80’s television franchise continues to live on – despite being off air since the 1990s it continues to enjoy popularity amongst you, our readers. Interestingly it not only managed to beat current ITV programme GMTV but also its rival of the time, BBC Breakfast Time.
Yes coming in third with 17% of the vote was the first national breakfast programme, BBC Breakfast Time. It was launched just two weeks before commercial rivals TVAM and for some time had the edge over its counterpart. But as with our poll it was ultimately TVAM that edged ahead. In fourth place is TVAM’s replacement GMTV which will leave the airwaves later this year to be replaced by Daybreak. GMTV secured 15.8% of the vote but may have done better if its reputation hadn’t been tainted by scandal and departures.
In fifth place is Channel Four’s memorable The Big Breakfast with 7.8% of the vote followed by BBC Breakfast News with 0.9%. Sky’s Sunrise, which is still on-air, doesn’t seem to do it for you. It got just 0.9% of the poll placing it second from bottom – clearly our readers aren’t Sky viewers. In bottom place was the awful but thankfully short-lived series Rise with 0.7%.
Check back tomorrow for our new poll which will be asking you to vote for your favourite David Croft comedies from the likes of Allo Allo, Are You Being Served? and Dads Army!
