Yesterday it was confirmed what most probably suspected already; Fox would not be renewing Joss Whedon’s series Dollhouse. The show had struggled with the ratings throughout its first series and the fact that Fox renewed it then came as a shock to many. However, hopes that Dollhouse’s second series would see an improvement in the ratings were dashed as it continued to struggle. We take a look at the ratings that proved to be the final nail in the show’s coffin.
Dollhouse returned to screens stateside on 25th September with its opening second season episode Vows. The episode pulled in just 2.5 million viewers. The second series saw things get even worse with Instinct only attracting 2.0 million viewers. The following week saw a slight improvement with 2.2 million for Belle Chose. But the final episode before Dollhouse was yanked off-air by Fox for the November sweeps saw ratings drop once more. Belonging dropped to 2.1 million viewers.
At this point Fox decided to take the series off-air for November with it returning in December for back-to-back episodes to conclude its run. Looking at the figures it’s not hard to see why the plug was pulled. All the episodes rated worse than every season one episode – and they didn’t exactly light up the ratings chart. Fox did however show some faith in the series and give it another go but alas it just wasn’t to be.
