Team Murs v Team Grimshaw game helps celebrate Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day.

BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host, Nick Grimshaw was joined by FA150 ambassador and pop superstar, Olly Murs, at St George’s Park earlier this week for a hotly contested 5-aside football match.

Olly challenged Nick to the match ahead of the Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day on Saturday 10th August, which will see 150 events taking place around the country allowing people to celebrate the nation’s favourite game in The FA’s 150th anniversary year.

St George’s Park was a pretty amazing venue for the Radio One-derers to play their first ever game. – Nick Grimshaw

The pair got the full England training experience over the course of the morning, which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 1. Following in the footsteps of the likes of England stars Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Steph Houghton and Rachel Yankey – Nick and Olly were put through their paces by the expert trainers at St George’s Park.

The pair trained at Perform, the human performance, sports and exercise medicine and rehabilitation centre at the heart of the St. George’s Park, the FA’s National Football Centre.

As part of their warm-up, Nick and Olly took part in a range of pre-football training exercises. These included the Batak challenge, which tested their reactions, stamina and coordination, the Hydroworx underwater treadmill and various strength and conditioning exercises. They finished off their training by using the contrast pools – the hot and cold water pools helped reduce any muscle tightness ahead of the big game.

It’s been great working with The FA as an ambassador for its 150th anniversary so I was delighted to be able to pull a few strings and arrange this game against Nick at St George’s Park. I think the boys were inspired by playing at St George’s Park.

The performance was exceptional and we’re delighted to get the win. Days like today are why I love football – I’d encourage people to get involved with the Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day on Saturday 10th August and celebrate the nation’s favourite game in their own way. – FA150 ambassador, Olly Murs

Lining up with Nick for his team ‘Radio Onederers’, was former Welsh player Robbie Savage and colleagues from Radio 1. Olly’s teammates in ‘Olly Hot Spurs’, included former England player David May.

St. George’s Park is the training base for 24 England teams, the home of coaching education and a hub of activity for the local community. Over 800 elite coaches will be trained and qualified each year at St. George’s Park, helping to develop and nurture future talent.

Team Murs ran out the winners by 11 – 1 after a highly competitive 15 minutes each way.

Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day will see 150 events taking place across the country as part of The FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations – providing a showcase of The FA’s work at a grassroots level and giving the entire nation the opportunity to get involved with the sport. The events, being held by County FA’s and FA Charter Standard Clubs, will be open to people of all ages and abilities, with the public able to join in everything from tournaments, to skills sessions and coaching workshops.

Perform is part of Spire Healthcare, one of the UK’s leading private hospital groups with 38 hospitals across the UK. Perform is open to all and can provide any visitor to St. George’s Park with sports science and training facilities.
