It is quite difficult to choose one video clip of such a diverse and memorable career. Smith became a star thanks to BBC Two sketch show Not The Nine O’Clock News where he starred alongside Rowan Atkinson, Pamela Stephenson and Griff Rhys Jones.
With the latter he went on to form a double act with later sketch show Alas Smith and Jones which brought those famous talking head to head moments, so popular that it even spawned a BBC trailer promoting the virtue of the corporation alongside John Hurt, Letitia Dean, Richard Wilson and Noel Edmonds.
A writer and producer, Smith founded production company Talkback Television, with Jones, and directed six feature films.
There was also a comedy music interlude in 1987 when he teamed up with popstar Kim Wilde to release a cover of Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree for Comic Relief.
It is reported that Smith was found dead yesterday morning at his home in north London. His agent has told the press the comedy icon died in his sleep having suffered a heart attack.
