EyeSpy: Remembering Peter Gilmore

The Onedin LineActor Peter Gilmore died at the weekend in a London hospice aged 91. He was best known for his work on the Carry On movies, ITV adventure series Ivanhoe and BBC drama The Onedin Line.

His first major part was alongside Roger Moore in ATV’s Ivanhoe – a swashbuckling adventure series for ITV back in 1958 – followed by a number of small parts including in BBC drama The Rag Trade and ATV’s soap opera, Emergency Ward 10.

The first of numerous Carry On film comedy parts arrived in 1963 with Carry On Cabby. He last appeared in the franchise in the 1992 Carry On Columbus revival.

Over a decade long run Gilmore played the lead James Onedin in shipping saga The Onedin Line for BBC One bringing the actor much recognition as a dramatic performer.

As well as theatre successes, having first tred the boards aged 14, other appearances on television included in classic Doctor Who with the four-part story Frontios, sixties period drama Heartbeat and medical saga Casualty.

“On behalf of his wife Anne and Peter’s family I would like to thank those who have sent their kind thoughts and condolences.” Said Gilmore’s agent, Primie Carey via the BBC.

Gilmore was married three times to actresses Una Stubbs, Jan Waters and Anne Stallybrass. Here ATV Today salutes Peter with some rare footage from the making of The Onedin Line:
