Downton Abbey

The first series of Downton Abbey, ITV’s lavish new Edwardian drama, concluded with the UK’s declaration of war against Germany – World War One has broken out. ITV has already renewed the series for a second series which will doubtless explore the effects of the Great War on the Crawley Family – and the changes it brought to society – in greater detail.

The finale saw some big changes and upheavals for the Crawley family – not least the installation of a telephone at Downton Abbey! The romance between Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew (Dan Stevens) has hit another bump while Lady Edith’s letter to the Turkish Embassy came back to haunt her when her own relationship with Sir Anthony (Robert Bathurst) was dealt a deadly blow. Countess Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) suffered a miscarriage due to the scheming Miss O’Brien (Siobhan Finneran) while Violet (Dame Maggie Smith) and Isobel (Penelope Wilton) finally found something they agreed on!
