With Halloween later this week our Weekly Poll continues its brand new season asking you to vote for your favourite Horror Movie/Franchise. So is the gruesome Saw franchise that you love the most, the creepy The Ring stories or maybe you’ll be voting for Scream?

Scream (franchise)

The Scream franchise has so far clocked up three films with a fourth film currently in production. Scream launched in 1996 with the original film that was written by Kevin Williamson and Ehren Kruger and directed by Wes Craven. The film was set in the supposedly sleepy town of Woodsboro but the opening few moments of Scream saw with a brutal murder as Casey (Drew Barrymore) is stabbed repeatedly by a masked killer. However, the real victim of the murderers’ rampage is poor Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) who fights off several attempts on her life in Scream and its two sequels.

Also in all three films are Dewey (David Arquette) and ruthless, determined journalist Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox-Arquette). In the first film the killers turn out to be Sydney’s boyfriend Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu (Matthew Lillard) while Scream 2 see’s Billy’s mother (Laurie Metcalf) and Mickey (Timothy Olyphant) revealed to be the killers. Scream 3 unusually features just one killer but also reveals that Stu and Billy were pushed into the murders by the new killer; Roman (Scott Forley) – Sydney’s half-brother. Scream 4 has long been rumoured but its taken 11 years to happen! Joining Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox in the fourth film will be Anna Paquin, Mary McDonnell, Alison Brie, Kristen Bell and Hayden Panettiere.

The Ring (franchise)

The 2002 Hollywood film The Ring, and its sequel, are based on a Japanese horror film Ring by Koki Suzuki – the Japanese version is far creepier than the Hollywood films. The 2002 American version was directed by Gore Verbinksi and starred Naomi Watts as Rachel, a journalist who investigates the mysteries and horrific death of her niece Katie (Amber Tamblyn).

Rachel discovers that seven days before her death Katie visited a cabin and watched a video – a cursed video. The video is a bizarre sequence of images that tells the story of a dead girl; Samara (Daveigh Chase). Rachel watches the film and instantly gets a phone call saying “seven days”. Rachel tries to investigate the origin of the video and the girl Samara but her quest unveils the horrible truth of what happened to the cursed girl. In the sequel the cursed video tape continues to claim victims while Samara tries to posses the body of Rachel’s son Aidan (David Dorfman). The Ring was an instant hit due to its creepy, almost art-house feel and the heavy use of symbols – making a circle shape – throughout the film.

Saw (franchise)

A gruesome, gory and somewhat disturbing franchise following the games set for people by a psychopathic killer known as Jigsaw. The first film was set mostly in an industrial bathroom with two men, Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Dr Gordon (Cary Elwes) chained but given instructions on how they can escape via a recorded message. Over the course of the film it becomes clear the two are not the first victims of a man who sets ‘games’ and ‘traps’ for his victims to overcome. The several sequels to Saw since have continued the theme of Jigsaw’s traps and games for his victims although they have increasingly become more elaborate and more gory with the plots becoming more outrageous. The third and fourth sequels occur concurrently with each other with the plots ‘crossing’ over a several points revealing new information previously unknown. The franchise has produced six movies so far with a 7th film Saw 3D, released this Halloween.

Other horror movies/franchises in our poll are: Halloween, The Omen, Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, Friday 13th, Child’s Play and The Blair Witch Project.
