ATV In Europe: Stockholm Part 2

Our second and last day in Stockholm so we had to cram loads in. We started off with a fab breakfast at the Hostel and then, after getting lost again, found our way to the docks where we book an all-day hop-on/hop-off boat tour of Stockholm. The boat stops at six or seven stops around the various islands which make up this side of Stockholm.

Our first stop was at the Royal Palace in Stockholm which holds the Treasury Museum and the Armory Museum as well as the Royal apartments. As with Buckingham Palace in London there’s a guard, just one, on duty outside the Palace so we had photos taken with him. However, there is an exclusion zone around him, a rectangle in length, in which you must not step. I’m not sure what happens if you do step in that rectangle but he had a very big gun so I wasn’t keen to find out! We looked around the Armory Museum before heading back across the bay.

Our second stop was at the Vasa Museum which holds the wreckage of the Swedish Man-Of-War ship, the Vasa. It’s basically the Swedish version of the Tudor boat, Mary Rose. COmmissioned by a King desperate to show off and impress his European rivals the boat was crammed with cannons and guns and on its maiden voyage sank because of the weight. Three hundred years later Swedish archelogists found it and after a long process brought it up from the bottom of the sea and housed it in their Museum. It’s pretty much a complete find although they have restored parts of it as necessary.

After this we hopped back onto the boat and took a short trip to Stockholm’s Theme Park, though they call it a Fun Fair, which boasts FOUR Rollercosters! Four! Now I hardly call that a Fun Fair! I went on three out of the four rollercosters but the fourth was a little to fierce for me. Queuing time was at a minnium, hardly something you can say of our Theme Parks! We also had lunch in the park and moved next door to the Aquarium which boost sharks, stingrays, catfish and a mini-rain forest!

After this we went over to a part of Stockholm called ‘Old Town’ which reminds me off Paris. It’s full of narrow streets crammed with cafes, bars and boutiques. You could literally spend the entire day just exploring this quarter of Stockholm but our time was limited to just an hour though we did manage to cram in a drink at a bar.

All in all not bad for a days work although tomorrow we have a very early start for our flight to Berlin!
