In May we will go to the polls once more to vote in a referendum on whether or not the UK should adopt the Alternative Vote system. Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, is a keen supporter of the AV system and why wouldn’t he be? Under it the Liberal Democrats would likely have more MP’s in the Houses of Commons. Under the coalition agreement a referendum on the AV system was on the agenda for the firs time even though David Cameron disagrees with AV.
The AV system may not seem important to some at a time when the country is facing savage budget cuts and rising unemployment, fuel costs and inflation. But the changes to our electoral system are important because if we adopt the AV system it will change the face of UK politics and the Houses of Commons for ever. It won’t just mean more Liberal Democrats being elected (if after their betrayal of the students anyone actually votes for them again) it will mean the prospect of more coalition governments. That’s a prospect not welcome by many given how this current Con-Dem coalition has turned out.
However, the AV system will mean the election results will be more representative – perhaps – of how voters feel that the current system. It will mean that large majority seats will – for the first time – face serious competition and elections won’t be a breeze for them.
In May we will vote in the referendum on whether or not we should adopt the AV system. Ahead of that our Weekly Poll asks the same. Voting couldn’t be simpler.
