For the past week we’ve been asking you to vote for which companion from the original series of Doctor Who you would like to see return. Following the return of Jo Grant (Katy Manning) to The Sarah Jane Adventures this week we asked you to vote for who you’d like to see crop up next. The poll was restricted to original series companions only and did not include those such as Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) or The Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) who have already returned.
Well there was a very clear winner and it may surprise some – but not us. Besides Sarah Jane this companion was always our favourite and while she may not be everyone’s cup of tea it certainly seems a large chunk of you still fondly remember her. Yes Ms ‘Mouth on Legs’ with the Mara laugh came first. Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) topped our poll with 49.2% of the vote. The actress has reprised her role of Tegan for several of the Big Finish audio dramas but its unlikely she would return to television but we can but hope! Second in the poll was Liz Shaw (Caroline John) who had 19.6% of the vote – which just shows you how popular Tegan was.
In third place was the Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm/Lalla Ward) who was last seen in E-Space. However, given the Time War and the Doctor’s contestant references to being the last of his race it seems as though Romana is dead – but you never know. With 5.3% our ‘Other’ option was next. Suggestions for other companions, not in our listing, to come back included Ian Chesterston (William Russell), Leela (Louise Jameson) and Mel (Bonnie Langford). Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines) had 4.9% of the poll, Polly Wright (Anneke Wills) had 31%, Susan Foreman (Carol Ann Ford) had 2.7%, Peri (Nicola Bryant) had 2.6% and last but not least Ace (Sophie Aldred) had 2.2 % of the vote.
ATV Today would like to thank everyone who voted.
