EyeSpy: Remembering Davy Jones of The Monkees

Manchester born singer and actor Davy Jones has died aged 66. Jones will be best remembered as part of pop group The Monkees.

The band were put together for a 1960s American television comedy drama series which followed the failing fortunes of a pop four-piece. Songs performed within the show were also released as singles, such as Daydream Believer and Last Train to Clarksville.

Prior to his Monkees fame Jones had appeared in Granada Television soap opera Coronation Street playing the grandson of battleaxe Ena Sharples and a minor role in BBC cop show Z Cars.

In a statement his management say Davy Jones died in his sleep at his home in Florida following a massive heart attack. The Monkees also saw Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork in the line up. Jones and Dolenz appeared most recently in a programme broadcast on BBC 2 at the weekend, I’m In A Boyband, in which he discussed their rise to fame and subsequent fall from grace, “There is a period of time when all of a sudden the bubble bursts… I go into a bar or I go into a place and they’re doing a karaoke more often than not they’ll come over to me and say ‘hey Dave, will you do Daydream Believer?’  Now twenty years ago I would have said no, but now I say ‘Why not’, I do the best Davy Jones anyone’s ever seen”.
