Oscar Pistorius gets bail

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail by a court in Pretoria, South Africa.

Chief magistrate Desmond Nair set bail at one million rand (£73,000) with added conditions that he surrenders his passport, reports twice a week to a police station and lives at an undisclosed address.

Pistorius was arrested and charged on 14th February following the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home. The model and celebrity was shot four times in the early hours of Valentine’s Day.

Prosecutors had argued in court that Pistorius had the ‘means, money and motive’ to flee the country. As one of the most high profile athletes in the world, Oscar dominated the London Paralympic games last year, picking up two gold medals and a silver. He also competed in the Olympic games becoming first double leg amputee to participate but failed to pick up any medals.

Pistorius will be back in court on the 4th of June.
