Warp Films plan ‘Threads’ reboot

The drama that showed life after a nuclear attack…

Warp Films, the makers of hit Netflix series Adolescence, today announced it has acquired the option to develop the critically acclaimed 1984 film Threads into a compelling new TV drama.

Mark Herbert, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Warp Films:

“Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people. This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences. Reimagining this classic film as a TV drama gives us a unique opportunity to explore its modern relevance.”

It wasn’t the first BBC nuclear war and aftermath drama – they’d produced a gritty offering in the 1960s. But that black and white production wouldn’t scare BBC Two viewers half as much as its 1980s counterpart. Renowned for its groundbreaking portrayal of a fictional apocalypse, Threads offers a harrowing depiction of life in nuclear war-era Britain, set in Sheffield. This adaptation will explore prescient issues through rich, character-driven storytelling.

The original film’s chilling account immerses viewers in the struggles of ordinary people facing unimaginable hardship. Sheffield-based Warp Films remains dedicated to producing authentic stories that highlight working-class experiences and is proud to reimagine this iconic story, finding new layers of meaning and elements of hope.

“Set in the near future Threads examines a thirteen year period in the projected life – and death – of the City of Sheffield, during which time Britian is devastated by nuclear attacks.

“Threads follows the experiences of two families: the working-class Kemps and the middle-class Becketts and also depicts the subsequent long term consequences of the attack based on the research findings of  many scientific and professional bodies in Britain, the United States and the USSR.

“Threads was filmed entirely on location in Sheffield with many local citizens taking part as ‘extras’.”BBC Press Release, 1984

Warp Films, is set to deliver a fresh and impactful reinterpretation of one of the most influential films of the 20th century. With a strong tradition of bold, character-driven storytelling, Warp Films continue to push boundaries, highlighted in the recent Netflix drama, Adolescence, upcoming BBC drama, Reunion and building on a legacy that includes BAFTA-winning This Is England series.

Emily Feller, CCO & Executive Producer:

“Threads is clearly a deeply impactful story and right now, it feels more relevant than ever. This adaptation will allow us to uncover fresh interpretations in light of today’s world.  We imagine highlighting how resilience and connection can offer hope even in the most challenging of times. Through this lens, an adaptation of the incredible film can reexamine its significance for then and for now – allowing us to engage with a modern audience.”
