Sleeping in socks may ‘do more harm than good’

The Biggest Bedroom Mistakes You’re Making This Winter, According to Experts…

With the UK’s cold weather lingering, many people are layering up at night in an attempt to stay warm. Searches for “sleeping in socks” have surged by 86% in the past three months, while “sleeping in underwear” has risen by 40%, showing that Brits are rethinking their bedtime attire.

However, experts at Furniture in Fashion warn that your nighttime clothing choices could be affecting your sleep quality—and even your health.

1. Sleeping in Socks Might Do More Harm Than Good

While warm feet can help you drift off faster, wearing tight socks all night can reduce circulation, leading to discomfort and even waking you up. A spokesperson from Furniture in Fashion explains:

“If you want to wear socks to bed, make sure they’re loose-fitting and breathable. A good alternative is wearing socks until you feel warm, then removing them before falling asleep.”

2. Your Bedroom Temperature Matters More Than Extra Layers

Instead of piling on clothes, the key to staying warm without overheating is managing your bedroom’s temperature and bedding materials.

“Thick, heavy pyjamas can trap too much heat, causing discomfort. Instead, opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo, and layer your bedding so you can adjust through the night,” advises the expert.

3. Wearing Underwear to Bed Could Be a Mistake

While many people sleep in their underwear out of habit, letting your body breathe may be better for overall hygiene and comfort.

“Tight underwear can trap moisture, leading to discomfort and a higher risk of irritation. Opt for loose-fitting sleepwear or, if comfortable, try sleeping without underwear altogether,” says Furniture in Fashion.

4. The Best Sleep Setup for Winter

Experts at Furniture in Fashion recommend optimising your bedroom furniture and bedding choices for the best night’s sleep. This includes. a breathable mattress that regulates temperature, layered bedding to adjust warmth through the night, cotton or silk pyjamas instead of heavy fleece and a room temperature of 16-18°C for optimal sleep.

“The key to good sleep isn’t just what you wear—it’s how you set up your entire sleep environment. With the right bedding, furniture, and temperature control, you can stay warm without sacrificing comfort,” says the Furniture in Fashion expert
