On this Day 1964: New newspaper for Shropshire

OTD, January 1st 1964…

Reg Harcourt reports on a new newspaper The Shropshire Star that was to launch in 1964. The news of a new print local paper came after three recent regional titles had closed in Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham.

The newspaper was launched by Douglas Graham, who features in this footage, the grandson of the Express & Star’s founder, Thomas Graham. Over the years Mr Graham over saw several local newspaper titles, the running of the company was handed down to his son Alan Graham in later years.

The Shropshire Star continues to operate.
