TV Weekly: From the annual Jools to the sounds of Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Jools Holland’s Annual Hootenanny

Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra welcome in the new year with Jools’ Annual Hootenanny. Jools counts down the seconds to midnight with a stellar line-up of artists and a celebrity audience to offer predictions and resolutions for the coming year. It’s set to be the best New Year’s Eve party for viewers to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.

This year’s show will see performances from a rich mix of legends, brand new stars and artists who have had huge success in 2024.

Performing across the programme will be The Boomtown Rats, CMAT, Jade, Jungle, Kathy Sledge, Marc Almond, Paul Carrack, Roger Taylor of Queen, Ruby Turner and Toby Lee.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s NYE Disco

Queen of the dancefloor Sophie Ellis-Bextor brings all the disco fun and energy to New Year’s Eve in this dazzling TV event, as the nation gets ready to welcome in 2025.

Performing her global hits and some surprise numbers, Sophie and her all-star guests will party right into 2025 with plenty of glamour and glitz. Ellis-Bextor will be joined on stage by fellow disco sensation Jessie Ware, Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, Emily Roberts guitarist with The Last Dinner Party and the MDL Singers, who are guaranteed to bring in 2025 on BBC One and iPlayer with plenty of moves and sounds.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s NYE Disco for BBC One promises to be a night to remember. The festivities will continue after BBC One goes live to London for the traditional epic fireworks display. Viewers to BBC One Scotland have their own Hogmanay special (See lower down)

2024: The Celebrities We Cancelled

This one-off special chart the downfall of some of Britain’s previously untouchable celebrities over the course of a tumultuous year.

Through revealing interviews and analysis, 2024: Celebs We Cancelled unpacks the stories of individuals whose behaviour – ranging from controversial indiscretions to criminal actions—has led to their very public demise.

From January to December, Channel 5 tell the story of how each scandal unfolded, with commentary from journalists, critics and experts. Every whistle blower, every disastrous apology and every attempt to claim they did nothing wrong. With some cases being taken on by the police and others remaining issues for tabloids and HR Departments this documentary explores whether trial by media is the best form of justice.

The Last Leg of the Year

Channel 4 go to bed early at new year with an abundance of movies across the day, but they have put a little effort in by shaking their last leg.

Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker present an irreverent send-off to 2024 with a special edition of The Last Leg.

Joining the regulars on the New Years’ Eve offering are guests Chris McCausland, Sandi Toksvig, Guz Khan, AJ Odudu, Josh Pugh and Natalie Cassidy will join the boys in the studio to look back at the highs and lows of the past year.

Featuring hilarious VTs – including a special appearance from Craig David – joyously raucous debate and special musical performances, the gang will take a good-natured look back at the circus that was 2024, all while squinting at the looming promise (or is it?) of 2025!

With their trademark blend of acerbic wit, awkwardly insightful commentary and the occasional festive gesture, Adam, Josh, Alex and their guests will dive into the year’s most ridiculous headlines, aided by the ever popular #isitok hashtag.

Hogmanay 2024

For the first time, broadcaster Amy Irons will lead the Hogmanay celebrations on BBC One Scotland and the BBC Scotland Channel. Kicking the night off, comedian and broadcaster Des Clarke will host the Not Quite End of Year show at 9pm on BBC Scotland. Packed with music, laughter, and reflections on 2024, Des will chat with stars of screen and sport including Banjo Beale, Leah MacRae, Dr. Punam Krishan, Sammi Kinghorn, and Fin Graham.

The Not Quite End of Year show will also include musical performances from the legendary Marti Pellow, traditional Scottish band Skipinnish and rising Scottish star Rianne Downey.

At 11.30pm, the Hogmanay Show kicks off as Amy Irons ramps up the excitement for the countdown to 2025. Viewers can expect a proper party with music to get everyone dancing! Marti Pellow, Rianne Downey, and Skipinnish will return with more incredible performances, plus Georgia Cécile will join Skipinnish for a heartwarming rendition of Auld Lang Syne to ring in the New Year.

Amy will also sit down with Jack Docherty aka Chief Commissioner Cameron Miekelson from Scot Squad, Gladiators’ Sheli McCoy and Marti Pellow to reflect on their standout moments from 2024.

The countdown to The Bells will be broadcast live from Edinburgh, featuring the traditional Lone Piper, the firing of Mons Meg, and a breathtaking fireworks display above Scotland’s capital city soundtracked by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
