RTÉ has today announced that Doireann Garrihy has decided to leave RTÉ 2FM after five years.
Doireann will present her final 2FM Breakfast with Doireann, Donncha and Carl on RTÉ 2FM on Friday 31st May.
Doireann Garrihy:
“After 5 years of 2FM Breakfast it’s time for ventures new. Donncha and Carl, I have found brothers for life in you both. What an absolute blast of craic, ridiculous immaturity and lifelong bond building. Anyone would be blessed to work with one gentleman every day, I was beyond blessed to work with two. To the loyal 2FM listeners, through thick and thin you’ve been there. Your support has meant everything. There wasn’t a day I didn’t hop out of the bed at 5am. Thank you for welcoming me with open ears back in 2019 and every day since. Producer Grace, you’re a boss, a queen, a friend for life. Willem, it’s been an absolute pleasure. Thank you to Dan Healy for meeting me in 2019 and taking a chance on me. I’m so glad you did.
“Now, it’s time for my podcasts Doireann and Friends and The Laughs Of Your Life, to travel, to give more to the people who have been on this journey with me since the viral impressions video of 2016 and to pursue the projects I’ve been dreaming about. As we would say to our lovely callers on air, good luck and thanks.”
Garrihy presents 2FM Breakfast with Doireann, Donncha and Carl on RTÉ 2FM alongside Donncha O’Callaghan and Carl Mullan. Doireann also presents Dancing with The Stars Ireland on RTÉ One, the Irish version of Strictly Come Dancing.
In 2019, Doireann launched her podcast called ‘The Laughs of Your Life‘. The podcast shot straight to number one in the Podcast episodes and show charts. In this series, Doireann delves into the beauty of having a laugh, speaking to guests from all walks of life.
In April 2023, Doireann brought her podcast to the stage in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre for two sold out shows, including special guest Rylan Clark. In June 2023, Doireann launched her new podcast ‘Doireann and Friends’; a refreshingly frank podcast where she engaged in vibrant discussions with her friends and family, and delivered listener-involved content each week.
The Full Irish Hidden Camera Show Series with Doireann, Carl and Donncha aired in March 2024. The trio play pranks on the public, who are put in bizarre and outrageous situations. A special edition of the show aired Christmas Eve of 2022. In December 2021, Doireann presented ‘Big Night In’ on RTÉ One alongside co-host Dermot Whelan, it included celebrity pranks, studio games, audience surprises and a Christmas stocking full of other treats. Her TV show, ‘The Doireann Project’ has aired on the RTÉ Player and RTÉ Two and the show features a number of impressions of both well-known names across Ireland as well as characters we regularly meet every day.
Head of RTÉ 2FM, Dan Healy:
“Doireann is an exceptional broadcaster and has been a very important part of team at 2FM. Everyone in the station is sorry to hear that she has decided to leave. I am very proud of the breakfast show that Doireann presented with Donncha and Carl which has been loved by the audience and very successful in the JNLRs. Personally, I’m sorry to see her leave, but I respect Doireann’s decision. I wish her the very best for the future in everything she does. Doireann leaves 2FM in good shape and we look forward to building on the success of the breakfast show over the summer months and beyond.”
Doireann kicked off her radio career with AA Roadwatch, reporting on both Breakfast Republic and The Eoghan McDermott Show on RTÉ 2FM. It wasn’t long before she had shown her broadcasting potential and within a year, she progressed to a full-time position in Spin 1038 as their Entertainment Reporter in May 2016. In May 2017, she joined ‘The Zoo Crew’ alongside Martin Guilfoyle.
Doireann also regularly took to the hotseat on Today FM covering for ‘Alison Curtis Weekend Breakfast’ and also has rounded up entertainment news on Virgin Media One’s ‘The Six O’Clock Show’.
