The popularity of songs from worldwide music legends Tina Turner and Sinéad O’Connor has soared over the past year, according to a nationwide poll by Smooth Radio.
More than 63,000 votes were cast by the public in Smooth’s All Time Top 500 – the station’s annual countdown of the UK’s favourite songs. Across the May bank holiday weekend, the top 500 songs were played on air, with the number one announced just before 7pm today (Monday 6th May).
Music icon Tina Turner – the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll – who passed away in May last year, has five songs in the chart. Her cover version of The Best is her highest-placed song, jumping 30 places to number 27 – its best-ever position. Selling more than 100 million records, Tina became one of the world’s most successful recording artists ever. What’s Love Got to Do with it rises to number 148, while Private Dancer is up 82 places to 154.
Sinéad O’Connor’s powerful 1990 version of Nothing Compares 2 U, which reached number one in 14 countries, is one of the chart’s highest climbers, up 87 places to number 12. The singer died in July 2023.

“Smooth’s All Time Top 500 gives us a great insight into the nation’s favourite songs and artists, and is a fantastic way to celebrate the best music, which Smooth plays. It’s wonderful that the public has chosen to honour two music legends of our time – Tina Turner and Sinéad O’Connor – and the iconic songs they brought us. Forty years on from the release of Careless Whisper, the song remains as popular as ever, as does the music of George Michael.
“And 50 years since the world was introduced to ABBA, our love for their songs is undiminished. It is a testament to the enduring power of music from the world’s best artists that these songs continue to resonate so deeply with us.” – Smooth presenter Angie Greaves
