Lost Images from Post-War Society Photographer Patrick O’Higgins released in new book

From Steve McQueen to Jean Cocteau, Elsa Schiaparelli to Tennessee Williams and a host of other lesser-known characters, this photographic coffee-table book enthrals with the lost images of Patrick O’Higgins…

Patrick O’Higgins was best known for his bestselling memoir Madame, about the time that he spent working with the cosmetics tycoon Helena Rubinstein. But he also had a less well-known life as a photographer.

May 2024 sees the publication of the lost photographs that Patrick O’Higgins took in post-war Europe. The images include sitters such as Stephen Spender, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cecil Beaton, John Richardson, Jean Cocteau and Somerset Maugham alongside thoughtful and revealing portraits of less well-known characters and evocative genre scenes.  The result is a compelling and enigmatic insight into the art, literary, café society and aristocratic worlds that Patrick O’Higgins inhabited.

The book includes a foreword by Marianne Hinton, Patrick O’Higgins’s niece, and a biographical essay by historian and professional archivist Jane Marguerite Tippett. Both Marianne Hinton and Jane Marguerite Tippett are available for interview.

A coffee table book that mesmerises with never-before-seen photographic portraits of the famous (artists, writers, socialites), not so famous; and scenes from across post-war Europe, publishing company Zuleika has excelled itself in not only the selection of images featured, but in the production values of this limited edition (500 copies) book. With the book a work of art in itself, this visually stunning publication ensures that O’Higgins reputation as one of the most visually exciting photographers of his time is not lost in the passage of time.

Renowned for his 1972 biography of Helena Rubenstein, interest in author, columnist and photographer Patrick O’Higgins will be reignited with the publication of Monsieur on 16th May 2024. Available to pre-order through Zuleika at https://zuleika.london/product/monsieur/
