Great Coastal Railway Journeys returns for a third series…
Returning to BBC Two, this series will follow Michael as he embarks on a journey around the shores of the British Isles and beyond, exploring the diverse landscapes, rich history and unique cultures found along the coastline. Reaching from the petrified forest in Borth, Wales to the picturesque Tresco Abbey in the Isles of Scilly and across to the sea defences of the east coast, Michael discovers the hidden treasures of Britain’s coastal towns and cities. He investigates their connection to the sea, along with the forces of nature and history that have shaped them.
Michael Portillo:
‘I am delighted to present a third series of Great Coastal Railway Journeys. I hugely enjoyed meeting inspiring people and hearing the history and legends of our coastline.’
Michael also takes viewers across the English Channel to Northern France to visit the coastal Pas de Calais. Riding up front in the Eurostar cab, Michael enjoys fantastic views of the tunnel snaking ahead and emerges into the bright light of France, where he presents and intriguing glimpse into the culture and heritage of our continental neighbours.

From discovering the prehistoric secrets of Lyme Regis, uncovering the historic coastlines of Kent and delving into the treacherous waters off the Norfolk coast, each episode promises to immerse viewers in the beauty of Britain’s coastal regions, all accessible by train.
