Channel 5 celebrate the life and work of Dale Winton

Next time you’re in the supermarket and you hear the beep, think of Dale Winton on Supermarket Sweep…

Dale Winton burst onto our screens with Central Television’s  Supermarket Sweep in 1993 and stayed as a regular on telly screens for more than 25 years, becoming one the most successful prime-time presenters of his generation. Hugely ambitious and hardworking, Dale was driven to win the nation’s love after the tragic suicide of his mother.

Next week a Channel 5 documentary tells that story for the first time.

“This programme is a celebratory tribute to the life and career of TV legend Dale Winton, who captured the hearts of the British public and became one of the nation’s most beloved TV stars.”Channel 5

With powerful personal testimony, the programme uncovers Dale’s tragic childhood: his father died on the day of his bar mitzvah and his mother, a 1950s starlet, killed herself when he was just 21.

Channel 5 also reveals the romantic and financial struggles on his way to realising his dream of making it as a TV star. It was a meteoric rise against the odds that saw Dale present everything from Pets Win Prizes and National Lottery: In it to Win It to Hole in the Wall, and what happened next, having turned down the job of presenting Dancing on Ice.

The Dale Winton Story: One of a Kind, Channel 5, 8.40 pm, Saturday March 16th.
