Bags packed and ready to go, Scotland’s Greatest Escape returns for another series, travelling the length and breadth of the country to find the ultimate holiday getaway.
Presented by Grado, each week two expert judges visit three different holiday locations vying for the title of Scotland’s Greatest Escape. From adventure breaks to foodie favourites, and luxurious retreats to budget-friendly abodes, the destinations will judged on four key criteria – accommodation, activities on offer, customer service and overall experience.
The series starts with the ‘Unique and Unusual’ category where each escape must have accommodation with an unconventional structure, layout or design. As Grado and the judges discover, Scotland is a haven for quirky getaways set against stunning landscapes.
The search begins on Scotland’s west coast at Out of the Blue in the village of Drimnin. Boasting an aeronautical theme, Out of the Blue features three unusual properties including the aluminium-clad Pilot House and the compact Captain’s Cabin with outstanding views over the Sound of Mull towards Tobermory.
Next, the judges head to The Broch on the Isle of Harris. Situated on the Bovre Lodge Estate, The Broch is a three-storey drystone building with a turf roof, inspired by Iron Age structures historically found across the Scottish coastline.
Owners Cathra and Adam bought the estate in 2008 and took three years to build The Broch. The couple also own Taransay, the UK’s largest uninhabited island.
The final escape this week is The Tabernacle which sits northwest of Perth in the village of Dull. A converted church from the 1800s, it has floor-to-ceiling alter windows, a hot tub and breathtaking views across the Tay Valley. Owner Nir reveals to Grado why this £1 property purchase became a real family affair.
Scoring the locations out of 10, industry experts Fiona Campbell and Vanessa Kanbi must decide whether Out of the Blue, The Broch or The Tabernacle will win the ‘Unique and Unusual’ category and head to the grand final.
