Coventry University retains ‘first class status’

Coventry University retains first class award in People & Planet University League Table results…

Coventry University has once again retained its first class award in the People & Planet University League Table which assesses the environmental and ethical performance of UK universities. The university moved up to 23rd out of 151 institutions nationwide and was rated as second best in the West Midlands. The education establishment has achieved a first-class rating every year since 2012.

The league table by People & Planet, a student campaigning network, looks at a variety of areas of sustainability and environmental friendliness. Coventry University scored 100% in three areas: Policy and Strategy; Staff and HR; Environmental Auditing & Management Systems. There was also a score of 96% in Education for Sustainable Development.

The university Group’s efforts to transition to a sustainable campus were recently recognised by the 2nd edition of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, placing the Group inside the top 250 universities in the world and top 50 in the UK and the recently relaunched Staff Sustainability Champions Group now has over 80 members.

People & Planet also highlighted Coventry University having a member of the university’s senior management team, Professor Ian Marshall, having responsibility for sustainability, the university running a staff engagement scheme and setting SMART targets in each of the following areas: Construction & Refurbishment, Emissions & Discharges, Community involvement, Biodiversity, Waste management, Travel and Transport, Sustainable procurement and Water.

Mark Cammies, managing director for property, facilities and infrastructure at Coventry University:

“To gain a first class award in the People & Planet League Table for the 12th year running is testament to the efforts of staff and students across the university, as well as our ongoing commitment to delivering a positive sustainability impact. Education is one of our key areas as we help to guide students, staff and communities in sustainable development and moving up to 23rd in the league table emphasises that we continue to head in the right direction, while also knowing there are areas we can better demonstrate what we have to offer as a university.”

Coventry University was founded by entrepreneurs and industrialists in 1843 as the Coventry School of Design and  the university is now one of the largest in the UK and has world-class campus facilities, the UK’s first standalone 5G network and a digital community of learning. In September this year, the uni began teaching students at a new campus in China in a joint institution with the Communication University of China.
