A mother who has been diagnosed with cancer and a gold medal-winning athlete at the Para Commonwealth Youth Games this year, are among the award winners at a ceremony to celebrate their bravery shown on S4C.
Dathlu Dewrder (Celebrating Braveness) is presented by Elin Fflur, Owain Tudur Jones and Lloyd Lewis and will be shown tomorrow night on the channel. Ten winners will be awarded at the ceremony that honours our silent heroes here in Wales.
Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Amy Dowden is among the famous faces congratulating our heroes. Amy visits Hollie McFarlane who lives in Wrexham, and like Amy is overcoming her battle with cancer.
“Meeting Hollie this afternoon has been amazing, what an incredible human being, also going through this journey I can really relate to.” – Amy Dowden
Hollie has written a book to help young children cope with cancer diagnosis as she found herself unable to express what she was going through to her own daughter, Sydney.
“Everything had changed overnight” explains Hollie. “The first thing I thought was how I was going to tell Sydney. It’s just something so difficult to explain to a child. I was never afraid of dying, but I was afraid to leave Sydney. That’s the fear – I was fighting and fighting – that’s what I did.”
Tomi Roberts-Jones from Cardiff is one worthy recipient who has overcome many obstacles in his life. Tomi had a stroke before being born and when he was ten he started to suffer with epilepsy that resulted in him receiving treatment on the brain early this year.
In August he won gold at the Para Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago for the men’s 100m race. Tomi says, “I didn’t think I’d be running this year. Sport means the world to me, if I didn’t have sport I don’t know what I’d be doing.”
“Tomi is so determined… fighting back and then producing an incredible performance, and this is when sport transcends everything and brings out the absolute best in people.” – Para-Olympian, Tanni Grey-Thompson
