OTD, December 5th, 1980…
Lynda Berry reported on Christmas shopping at the Rackhams Department Store given the economic recession at the time causing a ‘cost of living crisis’. A spokesman for the store said business had been better than they expected and they will take three million pounds over Christmas.
Lynda speaks with a spokesman for the store while the report features shots of an Atari video game, a television display and an aftershave on sale. We also see an exterior view of Rackhams showing the 1980 Christmas window display.
The origins of the Birmingham department store date back to 1851, in more recent years the operation has traded under the House of Frazer brand, having been bought by Harrods in 1955, and then HoF in 1959.
