On this Day 1972: Midland divorce rates

ATV Today took a look at  divorce rates in the midlands with the assistance of the Birmingham Citizen’s Advice Bureau. 

Tony Maycock talks to Phyllis Field and Vera Defries about the higher number of enquiries about divorce which the help service receives every Monday and the reasons for couples wanting a divorce.

Mrs Field blames the weekend for the weekly Monday rise in divorce calls, noting, “I think mainly the reason is it follows Saturday and Sunday when married couples have a good deal more time together and in consequence rows occur and disagreements… and then come up on Monday morning very anxious to do something about it”.

Maycock asks about domestic abuse aimed at men and both women suggesting that in their experience they haven’t come across many situations of this. Mrs Field does however add that ‘there are many men who come with mental stresses from matrimonal difficulties’ which she suggests is often due to a ‘nagging wife’.
