SECRETS OF THE ROYAL PALACES
|
This time, Channel 5 uncover secret stories of palace private life – and the moments the royals wish were private – beginning with the royal family’s race to be by Queen Elizabeth’s side in her final moments at Balmoral. The programme forensically examines that day and uncover how the deep family rift between Harry and the rest potentially caused a tragic delay.
A rather happier palace secret came with the surprise arrival of a tin trunk at Buckingham Palace during the height of the Second World War. Inside was one of the most valuable jewellery collections ever assembled – all gifted to Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth. Wary of being seen as too ostentatious, the so-called Greville Bequest was kept hushed up, with pieces largely worn in private and only gradually seeing the light of day down the decades. To this day, a full visual record has never been released, and the secrets keep on being revealed – the latest a tiara worn by Princess Eugenie in 2018, and estimated to be worth £10 million.
Architectural historian Jonathan Foyle reveals the most private and least known of all royal residences, Bagshot Park. This sprawling 120 room Victorian Mansion sits hidden within acres of prime Surrey real estate and has been the home to Prince Edward for more than twenty years, but few ever get to see inside this secret palace thoughts to be worth north of £30 million.
There is also a look at two of the more embarrassing palace incidents of recent years, that the royals must have prayed were kept quiet. First there’s the story of Prince Andrew getting locked out of his Windsor pad: Royal Lodge. Nearly two decades earlier on the same Windsor estate, Princess Anne’s failure to control one of her bull terriers, Dottie, when it attacked a pair of young brothers led to the ignominy of a criminal charge.
