Doctor Who episodes starring David Tennant receive the highest IMDB rating on average, scoring 8.4 out of 10.
A new study has revealed David Tennant as the most loved iteration of The Doctor, achieving the highest rated episodes on average since the series was rebooted. David Tennant, who starred as the 10th Doctor, was found to have the highest rated IMDB episodes on average, at 8.4 out of 10.
The West Lothian actor has starred in the highest number of Doctor Who episodes, with a staggering 47 appearances in total across several series. This includes his return for the 50th anniversary and several special episodes between 2008 and 2010. Fan favourite Welsh screenwriter, Russell T. Davies, was the show’s primary writer throughout Tennant’s portrayal as the Time Lord.
Tennant is set to reprise the role of The Doctor for a three-part special in November, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the show. He is expected to regenerate into the show’s 15th Doctor, who will be played by Sex Education star, Ncuti Gatwa, and will lead the series from December.

Matt Smith, who played the 11th Doctor, ranked second with an average episode rating of 8.15 out of 10. He has appeared in a total of 43 episodes and had the longest series with 14 episodes in Series 7 (15 including the Christmas episode), which ran across 2 years. Steven Moffat was known as the head writer across Smith’s three series as The Doctor.
Christopher Eccleston, who played the 9th Doctor, ranked third with an average episode rating of 7.91 out of 10. Despite starring as the Time Lord for just one series, Eccleston’s Doctor marked the rebirth of the franchise, which hadn’t been broadcast since 1989.
Peter Capaldi, who starred as the 12th Doctor, came fourth with an average episode rating of 7.81 out of 10. He starred in three series and is the oldest actor to portray the character since the show’s revival. Steven Moffat was the head writer during Capaldi’s stint as The Doctor.
Jodie Whittaker, who starred as the most recent iteration of The Doctor ranked in fifth place with an average episode rating of 6.23 out of 10. She starred in 31 episodes across 3 series and was the first female portrayal of The Doctor since the show began in 1963. Chris Chibnall was the head writer for these series, who previously worked with Whittaker on ITV drama, Broadchurch.
