On this Day 1969: ATV ‘Goes Colour’ Promotion

Midlands News reported on ATV’s promotions announcing the forthcoming change to colour television in the Midlands.

Joan Palmer ATV announcer, shows the ‘ATV Colour Promotion Girls’ around the new studios at the Paradise Centre in Birmingham. The  women, wearing ‘ATV Goes Colour’ sashes, are given a tour of the colour equipment at the ATV Centre on Broad Street.

ATV went officially colour (after test transmissions) on Saturday, November 15th, 1969 with the first programme screened in colour being Thunderbirds. ATV moved from its original Midlands home of the Alpha Television Studios in Aston to the ATV Centre, in preparation for colour, in August 1969 with the studios officially opened in March the following year by Princess Alexandra.
