Channel 4 in search for Britain’s Best Beach Huts

In a three-part series craftsman and restorer Jay Blades and interior design expert Laura Jackson travel the UK’s coastline in search of the quintessential seaside staple, the great British beach hut.

There are more than 20,000 beach huts gracing our promenades, dunes, clifftops and sands and their variety is as staggering as their number, from the quirky and the ingenious to half-a-million-pound hideaways.

Heading to some of Britain’s most beautiful locations, Jay and Laura compete to find the best beach huts the country has to offer, visiting small seaside spaces as individual as their owners. Along the way, they take in traditional beach huts with a twist, the most luxurious tiny retreats and cutting-edge 21st-century designs. In this episode, Jay and Laura go in search of the best traditional beach huts with a twist, discovering how the interiors of these tiny treasures are as varied as their owners.

Jay starts his adventures in Norfolk, meeting a fellow craftsman who’s created an amazing multi-coloured patchwork hut made entirely of driftwood, before heading to Herne Bay where wedding bells are in the air at a unique beach hut on the pier. In Hampshire, Laura’s transported into a 1940s time warp, then heads east to Essex where an inspirational beach hut owner is making dreams come true.

Laura concludes her first beach hut hunt in Hastings, discovering how the town’s three-storey Victorian ‘net shops’ have been at the heart of this community for 200 years. Five fabulous huts – but which will be crowned Britain’s best?

The first episode airs tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm.
