Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, today told how he feels Boris Johnson should be stripped of his £115,000 yearly allowance privileges.
He said, “Why should he lose it? Well, no Prime Minister ever before has misled Parliament in the way that Boris Johnson has done. He is now a disgraced former Prime Minister. He was found that he’s lied on many occasions on really important issues and has brought real sadness and distress to tens of thousands of families who were bereaved during Covid and I think this is a very serious matter.
“That’s why I think while the committee have done a good job within its ability to sanction the Prime Minister, I think it’s now up to Rishi Sunak to speak for the bereaved families and say that this £115,000 a year allowance for life should not go to Boris Johnson and if he’s got office costs he should pay them himself.”
When quizzed on some of the things Boris did achieve like getting Brexit done and the vaccine roll out, he stayed firm in that this outweighed the positives.
“Well I don’t agree there are any positives. His trade deal was a disaster. On the vaccine rollout – it was the amazing scientists that should take the credit, not Boris Johnson, and the amazing NHS that should take the credit, not Boris Johnson. And on Ukraine, let’s remember this cross party agreement – every party in parliament has supported the government policy to really help Ukraine, so I don’t think we can give Boris Johnson the personal credit. So therefore I think you have to judge him in the round and I think he’s been very damaging for our country.
“On the series of lies he told the British people and parliament, he has to be held to account for that. Rishi Sunak said on the doorstep of Number 10 that he wants to restore integrity and accountability to the British government and we agree with that, but he’s not doing that. Boris has to be held properly to account, and then we need to get on and deal with the issues that matter to the British people. The cost of living, mortgages going up, food prices, energy prices, the NHS crisis… These are the issues we need to be focused on.”
He later went on to say, “Surely they need to consign him to the history books and get on and do the job… MPs should never be above the rules. And if Mr Jenkins hasn’t then he should be facing the consequences [too].”
Disgraced Johnson has signed up to write a weekly newspaper article for The Daily Mail. He had a previous career as a newspaper journalist, but was fired for lying. A further two sackings from other outlets followed in the following years.
