ITV’s This Morning has addressed the controversy surrounding former host of the show, Phillip Schofield.

It has been pretty much business as usual for the show over the past 2 weeks despite figuring prominently in the headlines amid the fallout from Phillip Schofield’s ‘resignation’, confession that he had an affair with a much younger colleague and accusations of toxic behaviour behind the scenes.

However, after Schofield gave his side of the story to the BBC and The Sun last night, today’s (2nd June) show saw hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary discuss the matter with Gyles Brandreth and Sonia Sodha.

Playing multiple clips from the presenter’s BBC interview, Alison started to cry, noting:

“I’m just finding it really painful because obviously I loved Phillip Schofield. And it’s weird because I still love Philip Schofield. However what he’s done is wrong, he’s admitted it, he’s said sorry. But as a [TV] family we’re all really struggling to process everything and I never know what to say.

“But I remember what my mum always said: ‘Use your Bible as your Sat Nav in life Al’, and in the Bible it says ‘he without sin, cast the first stone’. And I just don’t want to say anything bad because obviously I’m in conflict.”

Co-host O’Leary added: “It’s very difficult for us to cover this story – he’s a friend and a colleague.”

Schofield resigned from ITV on Friday (26th May) and was dropped by his talent agency YMU after admitting that he had an “unwise, but not illegal” affair with a young male runner who worked on This Morning.

Due to the fact that the runner was his junior on the daytime show, Schofield’s behaviour has been widely-condemned as an ‘abuse of power’.

The runner was only 15 when Schofield first met him at a theatre school, which has led to speculation that their later relationship was the result of grooming.
