A recent report has taken a look at the areas in the UK where people are most likely to shoplift.
Spurred by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, the team at TradingPedia decided to study the correlation between the reduced purchasing power of the population and the incidence of shoplifting throughout the country. They based the findings on the latest crime data provided by the Office of National Statistics.
Shoplifting rates were calculated based on 100,000 residents and the data was drawn on a colour-coded map. The most dangerous region in this regard is the North East, however, the UK’s shoplifting capital is no other than the City of London with its crime rate far surpassing the ones of the other localities.
Key Findings:
* With a population of 8,600 residents, the City of London recorded 680 shopliftings in 2022, which means its shoplifting rate is 7,907 per 100,000
* Cleveland has the second highest shoplifting rate in the UK – 1,172 offences per 100,000 people
* Surrey is the safest area in terms of shoplifting – 309 offences per 100K residents
* The North East is the region with the highest incidence of shoplifting – 778 offences per 100K people
* Yorkshire and The Humber is the second most dangerous region – 702 offences per 100K people
