Coronation Street character to be targeted in acid attack

New images show Justin Rutherford returning to Weatherfield to cruelly attack Daisy Midgeley with acid on her wedding day.

Coronation Street has been working with The Katie Piper Foundation and Acid Survivors Trust International on a storyline that will highlight the devastating impact and long lasting effects of acid attacks.

Beginning on screen next week, the storyline will see Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) targeted in a sinister act of revenge by her stalker Justin (Andrew Still), just as she is about to become Daniel Osbourne’s wife.

After pushing her fears that the wedding is cursed aside, Daisy looks a million dollars as she gets ready to leave The Rovers for a final time as Miss Midgeley. Daisy’s chauffer Ryan (Ryan Prescott) arrives at the pub to collect her, however they are both horrified when Justin makes his presence known.

Justin, holding a glass full of clear liquid, advances on Daisy as he throws acid at her.

Charlotte Jordan who plays Daisy said of the storyline:

“When I was first told about this storyline, I really didn’t see this coming. It’s not something you see a lot on television. There has been a fear lurking in the back of Daisy’s mind since Justin was released on bail. Seeing him again, she is certainly scared of how he is going to react.”

The ITV soap aims to highlight the devastating impact and long lasting effects of such heinous attacks.

Producer Iain Macleod:

“As well as the medical impacts, we will explore the social fallout of having your appearance profoundly changed, both in terms of your own ability to process that and how the wider world reacts to you.”

There are thousands of deliberate acid attacks committed every year around the world. In most cases, women and girls are the victims of attacks, and men are the most common perpetrators. Survivors often face a variety of issues, according to the Katie Piper Foundation. These may include PTSD, sight loss, limb loss and new visible differences.

Sarah Green, Chief Executive of The Katie Piper Foundation, said:

“Coronation Street have shown determination in their research to portray the reality of such attacks and the long-lasting impact they have, not only on the individual, but also the family and the wider community.

“We hope that story line delivers much needed awareness around the life of all survivors of burns – not just the initial impact but the proceeding hours, days, months and years of their lives.”

Acid Survivors Trust International seeks to end such violence at a global level and has helped to change laws in Cambodia, UK, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Jaf Shah, Executive Director of Acid Survivors Trust International, said:

“Coronation Street is to be commended for confronting this particularly brutal form of violence, a single act of violence that carries lifelong consequences. We hope it paves the way to increased understanding of the devastating and complex impact on the lives of survivors.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8pm on ITV and STV
