‘Tis the season to be jolly – but with Christmas just around the corner, many families across the country are feeling the stress of the festivities, as they begin to get their homes ready for the holidays.
Whether you’re readying your house for the arrival of the family, or you’re tackling that tedious mulled wine stain on your carpet, cleaning and laundry expert, Dr. Beckmann has given the gift of cleaning this Christmas, with a festive 12-day Countdown to Christmas top tips, to ensure your humble abode is merry and bright this festive season.
12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS CLEANING
DAY ONE: Dreaming of a GloWHITE Christmas
First things first… it’s time to rescue your Christmas decorations from the attic and give them a well-needed dust. To brighten up your snowmen, angels or snowflake soft toys place them in the wash alongside a whitening powder to bring the faded colour back to life.
DAY TWO: A truly clean Christmas
Christmas is almost upon us, so it’s time for a clear-out. Pop your favourite Christmas classics on and go through your house top to bottom and get rid of anything you don’t need – ready for the new year! Don’t forget to clean those usually forgotten items such as handles, and doorframes, and make sure to scrub at those skirting boards with a damp cloth after tackling them with a vacuum and duster to pick up any excess dirt.
DAY THREE: Winter windows
Windows are often forgotten about in the lead up to the festivities, but as your Christmas lights light up your homes, any sign of dirt is impossible to avoid. Give your windows a spruce with a glass cleaner, ensuring those mucky fingerprints are eradicated before the celebrations begin. If you don’t have any in the cupboard, simply mix white vinegar, distilled water and a drop of essential oil, then shake. Spray the solution lightly over the affected area and wipe to rid your windows of any unsightly marks.
DAY FOUR: Cleaning down the chimney
One of the cosiest parts of the Christmas is gathering round the fireplace, but charcoal often has a nasty habit of getting everywhere! You can eradicate these grinch-worthy stains by blotting the blemish with cool water mixed with normal washing-up liquid. Finish by dabbing the area until the liquid is absorbed.
DAY FIVE: Merry mulled wine
Alcohol stains can be a nightmare before Christmas to get out of your carpets and furniture, especially mulled wine. If you have an unfortunate spillage, make sure you blot the alcohol with a cloth until the liquid is absorbed, then sponge with cold water. An Upholstery Stain Remover is great to have in the cupboard, ready and waiting for those stubborn upholstery stains!
DAY SIX: Tackle the teapot
Descale your kettle ready for the winter warming hot drinks. Fill your pot with a mixture of half water and half vinegar, leave to soak overnight. Rinse thoroughly in the morning to remove any lingering odours, then boil up some fresh water
DAY SEVEN: Give your appliances a 5-star service
Tackle the dishwasher and washing machine with a deep clean cleaner. Pour the powder directly into the drum or bottom of your appliance, then select a standard cleaning programme and run the cycle. Home appliances are on a never-ending cycle during the holiday season, so using a specialised cleaner to banish the bacteria will ensure your clothes and dishes are left fresh and clean.
DAY EIGHT: The Molar Express
Everyone loves a chocolate Advent Calendar in the run-up to Christmas, but with kids around there is bound to be chocolate trodden into the carpet or spilt onto the sofa. Be sure to scrape any excess chocolate off the stain, then blot the mark with a damp cloth. Finally, apply a stain remover or detergent to the stain and scrub!
DAY NINE: Tinsel toilet treatment
Spritz your toilet using Toilet Cleaner, and yes of course Dr, Beckmann has such a product as well as several other brands in supermarkets. Watch as the foam fizzes up leaving an ultra-fresh fragrance – so clean you could eat your Christmas dinner off it!
DAY TEN: Paw-fectly clean-up after your pets
Spruce up your pet’s bed ready for the Christmas fun, pop it in the washing machine for a deep cleanse, then give those stubborn marks a scrub with a pet stain and stink remover.
DAY ELEVEN: Overwork that oven
Deep clean your oven ready for Christmas dinner. Squirt oven cleaner all over the exterior and interior of the oven. Leave overnight, then use a cloth to scrub the spillages away. Your oven will be shining clean and fresh in no time!
DAY TWELVE: Christmas Magic
Pop all of the family’s Christmas jumpers in the wash ready for the big day! And finally…RELAX! Put your comfy slippers on, the festivities have begun – Merry Clean-mas!
