ATV Midlands News took a look at the progress of what would become Birmingham’s ATV Centre which opened in 1969. Footage shows the site on Broad Street with what little remained of the former West End Cinema.
The theatre had opened as The Curzon Hall in 1864, later becoming a cinema, restaurant and dance hall. It closed for the final time in March 1967 for the ATV redevelopment which would include new studios, an office block, multi-story carpark, nightclub, shops and hotel complex.
ATV Centre closed in 1997 and was demolished in 2016. It has been replaced with a multi-use space which includes offices, flats and commercial outlets. The hotel and Alpha Tower (ATV’s former HQ) however survive.
