Sky Arts looks at the Holocaust Monument of Names in Amsterdam

The Holocaust Monument of Names documentary is part of The Art of Architecture series.

Daniel Libeskind, Holocaust Monument of Names, Amsterdam was constructed last year to remember the Jewish people who did not survive their brutal treatment during the Second World War.

Of the 140,000 Jews who lived in the Netherlands in 1940, 102,000 did not live to see the war end. Most Jews, Sinti and Roma living in the Netherlands who were persecuted by the Nazis were murdered in the gas chambers at extermination camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Belzec, Majdanek, Chelmno and Sobibor.

A few thousands died in mass executions or from illness, hunger, exhaustion or slave labour.

The National Holocaust Memorial of Names, designed by Daniel Libeskind and unveiled in September 2021, is the first tangible monument to collectively honour and remember these victims with no marked graves, more than 75 years after World War II.
