OTD 1959: Sink Hole on Union Street

On this Day: April 2nd, 1959.

ATV Midland News filmed a few shots of a hole in a road in Birmingham City Centre.

‘Sinkholes’ have been reported and discussed more in recent years, but this footage shows that even over sixty years ago there was a problem with holes appearing suddenly swallowing up all above.

The street in question is Union Street, which was home to some of Brum’s popular stores including Wright’s the Bakers, Arthur Taylor Clothing and British Home Stores.
