On this Day 1980: Cheap supermarket booze sales hit bar profits

On this Day: October 28th, 1980

It seems some things never change as on this day in ’80 because of the sale of cheap alcohol in supermarkets, pubs are suffering a recession. A new supermarket has opened in Stirchley that only sells alcohol.

ATV Today’s Anne Diamond reported on the problem for pubs and the new booze superstore.

The feature includes a brief view of ‘Beer at Home‘ slogan on side of Davenports Brewery. Shots of Drinksville Liquor Store at Stirchley, a newly opened supermarket for beer and wine including shots of a customer buying alcohol.

Anne Diamond interviews Mr Guest, landlord of the Black Eagle pub at Hockley in Birmingham who talked about the narrow profit margins and how many pubs would not survive.
