Britain is a nation of reality TV lovers. Whether it’s sabotage on The Great British Bake Off or someone getting freaky in the sheets on Love Island, people love the drama. It may not be surprising that long-running Channel 4 and later Channel 5 series Big Brother has three of its infamous moments in the top five of the viewer voted list.
GalaSpins.com recently quizzed the nation to reveal the reality TV moments that shocked viewers to the core. Listed now on ATV Today are the sixteen most outrageous reality moments to grace UK telly screens.
1. SUSAN BOYLE’S BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT AUDITION
Topping the list as the UK’s most shocking reality TV moment of all time was Su-Bo’s legendary audition on Britain’s Got Talent, with almost one in five votes (17%). Susan’s audition has to be the most memorable of all time, for various reasons!
2. ROXANNE PALLET CLAIMING SHE WAS PUNCHED ON BIG BROTHER
In second place, with 14% of the vote, is the controversial moment on Celebrity Big Brother 2018 which saw Roxanne Pallet falsely accusing Corrie’s Ryan Thomas of ‘punching her’, which led to more than 27,000 Ofcom complaints, making it the most reported incident of the year. She battled with Colleen Nolan of Loose Women for the ‘most hated woman in Britain’ title across the latter part of last year. The Nolan took on Kim Woodburn and lost, greatly.
3. KINGA AND THE WINE BOTTLE
Big Brother season 6 (2005). Kinga + wine bottle = 3rd most shocking reality TV moment of all time with 10.5% of votes. For those who don’t fancy wandering over to You Tube to see what you’re missing let’s just say lady part meets vino container. Need we say more?
4. THE BIG BROTHER RACISM ROW
The Celebrity Big Brother racism row of 2007 between Jade Goody, Jo O’Meara and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty received 44,500 Ofcom complaints, led to police involvement, sponsorship losses and international outrage. It also earned 10% of votes, putting it in fourth place in the nation’s list of most shocking reality TV moments. An early example of how pointless Ofcom actually are.
5. THE ABLISA PUNCH
It’s the biggest moment of your life, auditioning on the X Factor with millions tuning in – what’s the worst thing you could possibly do at this point? Probably punching your singing partner in the face, which is exactly what Ablisa did to earn their spot as the fifth most shocking reality TV moment of all time, with 9% of the votes.
6. NIKKI GRAHAME’S ‘WHO IS SHE?!’ RANT ON BIG BROTHER
During her stint on Big Brother series seven (2006), Nikki Grahame had many tantrums in the diary room, keeping viewers entertained until she left the house in fifth place.
Nikki’s most famous moment, and the catchphrase that has stuck with her ever since, is her ‘who is she?!’ meltdown, after being nominated for eviction by newbie Susie. This earned her 8% of votes, putting her in sixth place in the list.
7. SHARON OSBORNE THROWING WATER OVER LOUIS WALSH
Sharon Osborne throwing water over fellow judge, Louis Walsh, live on The X Factor is one of the most memorable moments in the show’s history – 7.5% of TV fans agreed, putting it in seventh place.
After making some very cheeky comments about her husband, it is no surprise that Sharon reacted in such a way!
8. NASTY NICK
The infamous Nasty Nick of Big Brother series one earned 7% of votes and eighth place in the list. Although his actions seem fairly tame compared to the likes of Kinga, Nick’s manipulation of other contestants caused quite a stir, eventually leading to his downfall as he was asked to leave the show by producers.
9. IAIN’S BAKED ALASKA FIASCO ON BAKE OFF
A moment that shocked the nation (with 6.5% of the nation), as one contestant’s Baked Alaska was sabotaged by fellow contestant, Diana, on The Great British Bake Off.
Iain’s dessert was removed from the freezer, which led to all kinds of chaos as the ice cream melted and the whole thing ended up being presented to Paul and Mary in a dustbin. #Drama.
10. MAKOSI’S ‘PREGNANCY’
It seems that Big Brother series six was packed with drama, with another outrageous moment from that same series appearing on the most shocking reality TV moments of all time, with 6.5% of the vote.
This time, it’s Makosi claiming to be pregnant after spending time in the hot-tub with Anthony, who went on to win the series!
11. GILLIAN MCKEITH SMUGGLING GOODS IN HER KNICKERS
A classic reality TV moment from 2010’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! Gillian McKeith couldn’t possibly face the bland food of the camp, so smuggled condiments in her knickers to spice things up – earning her 6% of votes and eleventh place.
12. GILLIAN MCKEITH FAINTING LIVE ON I’M A CELEB
Gillian’s antics have made the list yet again, this time for fainting live on TV during one of the I’m a Celeb Bushtucker Trials. The fainting was branded ‘fake’ by her fellow campmates, in a bid to get out of doing the trial. 6% believed it was their most shocking reality TV moment ever!
13. ‘DAVID’S DEAD’ MIX UP ON CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER
When Tiffany Pollard misunderstood Angie Bowie telling her about David dying, the nation went into meltdown. Tiff believed that Angie was talking about fellow housemate David Gest, and began crying hysterically and informing other housemates.
In fact she was referring to the sad passing of David Bowie. This hysterical mix up earned 5.5% of votes.
14. FRANKIE COCOZZA KICKED OFF THE X FACTOR
As the bad boy of X Factor series eight, Frankie Cocozza’s antics made it as the 14th most shocking reality TV moment of all time (with 5.5% of votes). The then 18-year-old was booted off the show after he was heard by production staff boasting about taking cocaine.
Still we all got to see his hairy love garden and mini Cocozza in the Big Brother jacuzzi later in the year, which made up for seeing Denise Welsh’s boobs.
15. KIM WOODBURN’S ‘ADULTERER’ RANT ON CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER
The ever controversial Kim Woodburn shocked the nation (5%) with her rants to her fellow housemates, branding them ‘adulterers’, and ‘chicken livered sh*ts’. The rants were so iconic that someone made them into a club-worthy tune!
Kim took a dislike against ‘two faced’ Colleen Nolan, who wasn’t in the mood for dancing or romancing. The pair squared up on Loose Women, but two Nolan’s onto one failed to impress ITV viewers.
16. JOSH BETRAYS GEORGIA ON LOVE ISLAND
We all know that Georgia of Love Island 2018 was a ‘loyal babe’, so when Josh walked down the stairs with another girl, Kaz, from Casa Amor, the nation was shook.
It’s safe to say that everyone felt for Georgia that night, however, as the series went on, Georgia’s attempts at convincing people that she was ‘loyal’ failed miserably. This was the most shocking reality TV moment for 4.5%.
