Almost three quarters of Brits will shun DVDs in favour of streaming sites for their Christmas movie viewing.

“Given the popularity of streaming services, it’s unsurprising that many people will be opting to watch their Christmas films via these service providers, rather than more traditional methods, however I was surprised that the survey found this would be almost three quarters of Brits in 2018. The advantages of streaming sites are very clear, with the variety of choice and the convenience being a huge bonus over traditional methods.” – Mark Kelly, marketing manager at Laptops Direct
Streaming sites are disrupting telly traditions at Christmas with the majority of Brits shunning DVDs in favour of streaming sites and two Netflix Originals are noted by many of those polled as being on their festive watch list, with The Christmas Chronicles and A Christmas Prince making the viewing list along side festive favorites such as It’s a Wonderful Life and Home Alone.
According to a survey carried out by Laptops Direct, 73% of those watching Christmas movies this year said that they’ll be getting their festive fix from streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. This is compared to only 27% who’ll be favouring the traditional method of heading out to buy a DVD before snuggling up on the sofa to watch it.
The majority (64%) of people said they traditionally watch their first Christmas movie of the year when putting up their tree, as this is when the festive season begins for them.
This is revealed alongside the news that 78% of UK residents will watch at least one Christmas movie over the festive period, with the average person watching six Christmas movies this year.
Meanwhile the betting for what will be the most watched show on Christmas day is certainly starting to look interesting, as the odds of Michael McIntyre’s Big Christmas Show plummeting from 20/1 into 6/1.
Top Christmas Day TV Viewing figures: 5/4 Mrs Brown’s Boys, 7/4 Call The Midwife, 9/2 Strictly Come Dancing, 6/1 Michael McIntyre’s Big Christmas Show, 20/1 EastEnders, 33/1 The Great British Bake Off, 33/1 Torvill & Dean, 40/1 Queen’s Speech (BBC), 50/1 Coronation Street, 50/1 Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs
“Mrs Brown’s Boys has bounced back and is now ahead of Call The Midwife. But both will be looking over their shoulders as Michael McIntyre is coming with a late run.” – William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams
