ATV Poll: Who should present Daybreak?
It appears the announcement Lorraine Kelly’s mate Aled Jones is to join troubled ITV breakfast show Daybreak as her co-presenter has proved about as popular as Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley first thing on a TV morning. So who do you want to host the less than successful replacement of GMTV?
DAN LOBB AND KATE GARRAWAY
The first choice is Dan Lobb and Kate Garraway, the current warm and perky presenters who replaced Chiles and Bleakley after a year of fake tan and grumpy mornings. Kate and Dan both worked for GMTV prior to its axe and have proved reasonably popular with viewers.
LORRAINE KELLY AND ALED JONES
Lorraine Kelly currently hosts four-out-of-five editions of her magazine series Lorraine for ITV daytime, however, has in the past been the main presenter of TV-am’s Good Morning Britain and GMTV. She is to be joined by BBC Radio 2 and Songs Of Praise presenter Aled Jones. All sweetness and nice, but not the serious newsy programme ITV promised viewers with Daybreak.
ADRIAN CHILES AND CHRISTINE BLEAKLEY
The original hosts of Daybreak who proved to be much more tolerable in the evenings on BBC One’s The One Show. The old saying ‘don’t know what you’ve got, till its gone’ may spring to mind with some viewers finding these two more preferable than their successors.
PENNY SMITH AND JOHN STAPLETON
From posts on Facebook and in our own ATV Today comment box, it appears the most popular double act thus far is Penny Smith and John Stapleton. Penny joined GMTV in 1993 a few months after its launch and John Stapleton has presented for both TV-am and GMTV for many years as well as a spell with BBC One’s Breakfast Time.
FIONA PHILLIPS AND BEN SHEPHERD
Cute and cuddly Ben paired with humourous Fiona could be just what the television doctor ordered. Ben has proved a housewives favourite presenting shows such as The Krypton Factor and This Morning. Both proved popular presenters while hosting GMTV. Fiona has made a return to the Daybreak studios filling in for Lorraine and proved to be still much admired by the viewers who had stuck with ITV after GMTV’s demise.
ANDREW CASTLE AND EMMA CROSBY
The final faces of GMTV who were ditched unceremoniously by ITV bosses when GMTV was bought-out by ITVplc. Fans were left furious with ITV’s smug axing of the presenters and the long-running programme – which didn’t even get a decent farewell, which was seen as a further snub to Crosby and Castle. Petitions and Facebook comments saw at the time of Daybreak’s introduction these two on the top of the viewers list to bring back, so much so we mocked them up in the photo above at the time in a revamped Daybreak-style-GMTV. QUEENIE AND VIVIAN
When we created a studio suggestion for Daybreak not long after it launched (ironically ITV introduced a set not far off it a bit later) we shoved as hosts our no-nonsense old tarts Queenie and Vivian as presenters. They’d certainly get the nation talking. Our Showbiz experts, agony aunts and general gossips know what men want at breakfast time. But would ITV be ready for such a bold, vulgar and brash move? There is more chance of Katie Price and Keith Lemon taking over Daybreak. The latter pair do tick all the Q&V uncouth boxes certainly with their lowbrow telly trash. And well the way ITV is heading Price and Lemon taking over ITV breakfast isn’t as outlandish as it may first appear! You can vote for this pair in our poll box at the right of this article.
KERMIT AND MISS PIGGY
The popular double act were one of ITV’s most successful partnerships in the 1970s and early 80s. The original Richard and Judy of the network. With The Muppet Show they drew in millions of viewers to the channel with wit, song and entertaining chat. Most of the things Daybreak has been lacking. If the views of the viewers to the channel are to be believed Piggy and Kermit would fit right in alongside the Muppet programming management.
