Andy Murray will not be retaining his Wimbledon title as he was thrashed in the quarter finals, with the BBC scheduling department possibly quite happy about it.
Andy Murray’s defence of his Wimbledon crown ended on Wednesday after he was beaten in straight sets by the highly rated Grigor Dimitrov on Centre Court. Murray had strolled through to this stage without dropping a set, but he was out in straight sets earlier today: 6-1, 7-6, 6-2. This being a massive disappointment to many British fans watching on.
Murray would have attracted good ratings in a potential semi final and final for the BBC, however with Murray out, as well as another favourite in Rafael Nadal this could please the sport schedulers with a busy weekend of sport across the corporation.
World Cup quarter finals take place on Friday with the Beeb having France v Germany at 5pm opposite a potential Murray semi final, and therefore channel schedules were not cemented. Now the football will be on BBC 1 with the tennis on BBC 2.
The British Grand Prix takes place this weekend at Silverstone too with both tennis finals scheduled for BBC 1 and the F1 qualifying and Race set for BBC 2 – this could now change ahead of the weekend, especially as favourites such as Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are also out in the women’s side of the draw.
