Hilda Braid dies

Hilda Braid, who played Nana Moon in the BBC soap EastEnders, has died at the age of 78.

The actress died peacefully after a period of ill health, a spokesperson for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton has confirmed.

“Hilda was a lovely actress who brought great humour and wit to the role of Nana Moon which earned her many fans, young and old alike,” said Carolyn Weinstein, the company manager of EastEnders. “Everyone at EastEnders sends deepest sympathies and condolences to her family and friends at this sad time.”

In 2002, Hilda was cast in the role of Victoria ‘Nana’ Moon, the paternal grandmother of Alfie (Shane Richie) and Spencer (Christopher Parker). The character was mostly used for comic relief.

Nana’s storylines included a short-lived romance with Wilfred Atkins, played by Dudley Sutton, which ended when he scammed Pat Evans out of thousands of pounds, and ticking items off her bucket list after being diagnosed with dementia.

EastEnders co-star Shane Richie said: “She was my Nana on screen and in real life. I adored her. I’ll really miss her.”

Braid’s acting career also encompassed roles in Citizen Smith, Casualty, The Bill, Brookside, Crossroads and Man About The House.
