The seventies season on 5 continues with royal celebrations…
1977 was the year that Britain celebrated The Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Large scale parties and parades were held across the commonwealth, and Queen Elizabeth basked in the hope and the glory of her legacy of what had already been and what was to come.
Throughout the year, Queen Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh took on a tour of the UK, meeting millions of people on the first leg before heading round the world where they clocked up over 55,000 miles attempting to bring nations together.

Britain embraced the pomp and pageantry – souvenirs sales went through the roof, and the Sex Pistols were aiming for God Save the Queen to get to Number One.
This documentary asks if the jubilee genuinely strengthened the monarchy’s reputation at a time when many questioned its very existence, and whether the Queen’s Big Year provided the lasting legacy it was hoped for.
