OTD, April 3rd 1975…
It was the television wedding of the year when Crossroads aired the marriage of Hugh Mortimer (John Bentley) to Meg Richardson (Noele Gordon) on this day in 1975. Recorded on the 10th of February the scenes outside Birmingham Registry Office and St Phillips Cathedral brought the city centre to a halt, as this ATV Today news footage shows.

The wedding was watched by 18 million viewers, one of the biggest non-sport daytime viewing figures.
In this feature Derek Hobson speaks with some of the fans waiting outside the Cathedral as to why they have turned up for the television wedding. Hobson then talks to Noele Gordon and John Bentley about the event.
50 years ago today, the wedding saw ITV unite in the screening, prior to episode 2301 each ITV area showed the daytime saga at different times and on different days. It became one of the most watched editions. It can currently, along with several other episodes, be seen on ITVX.
