Top tip to ‘Keep your bathroom mirror mist-free’

Foggy mirrors can be a persistent inconvenience in any bathroom…

However, experts have revealed a natural solution to keep your bathroom mirror fog-free: a small bar of soap. Plumbworld, the bathroom and kitchen expert, shared a method of using soap to keep your mirror clear and fog-free after every use, along with its benefits.

Preparation:

Start with a clean, dry mirror. Ensure there is no residue or moisture on the mirror before applying the soap. This will help the soap layer adhere better and be more effective.

Applying the Soap: Take a dry bar of soap (any basic bar of soap will do, such as hand soap or body soap). Rub the bar of soap directly onto the mirror. You don’t need to press hard; just lightly glide the soap across the entire surface of the mirror. You’ll notice a thin, cloudy layer forming as you do this.

Buffing the Mirror: After applying the soap, use a clean, dry cloth or a microfiber cloth to buff the mirror. Gently rub the mirror in circular motions to remove the cloudy soap layer. Continue buffing until the mirror appears clear and free of any visible soap residue. The goal is to leave behind a very thin, invisible layer of soap that will act as a barrier against fog.

Why It Works: The thin layer of soap left on the mirror reduces the surface tension of the glass. When hot steam from the shower fills the bathroom, the water vapour has a harder time condensing on the mirror’s surface. This simple barrier helps to keep the mirror clear, preventing fog from forming in the first place.

Reapplication: Depending on how often the bathroom is used and how much steam is generated, you may need to reapply the soap every few weeks to maintain its effectiveness.

Benefits of a Fog-Free Mirror: Efficiency: A clear mirror enables precise and uninterrupted grooming tasks, such as shaving, applying makeup, or styling hair, saving you valuable time.

Safety: By preventing condensation, the risk of minor injuries or mishaps is reduced, ensuring safer grooming practices.

Reduced Maintenance: A fog-free mirror requires less frequent cleaning, helping to prevent streaks, smudges, and moisture build-up that could lead to mould or mildew.

Enhanced Aesthetics: A clear mirror contributes to a tidy and well-maintained bathroom, making the space more inviting and pleasant to use.

Longevity of Bathroom Fixtures: By minimising moisture in the air, you help protect other bathroom fixtures from water damage or rust, extending their lifespan.

A spokesperson from Plumbworld:

“Keeping your bathroom mirror fog-free with a simple bar of soap isn’t just a neat trick—it’s also a great way to save money on expensive anti-fog sprays or treatments. Many of these commercial products can be pricey and often contain harsh chemicals that aren’t necessary for achieving the same result. By using a basic bar of soap, something most of us already have at home, you’re not only cutting costs but also avoiding unnecessary purchases. This method is practical and budget-friendly, perfect for households looking to make small changes that add up over time.

“Beyond saving money, this technique can also be a time-saver. Instead of spending extra time wiping down your mirror every morning, you can enjoy a clear reflection right after your shower. This is especially useful during busy mornings when every minute counts. In addition, since soap is gentle and easy to apply, it won’t damage your mirror’s surface, keeping it in good condition for years to come. With just a bit of soap and a quick buff, you’re set for a fog-free start to your day.”
