Lord Simon Woolley becomes a trustee of The Lang Lang International Music Foundation

The Lang Lang International Music Foundation has this week announced the appointment of Lord Simon Woolley of Woodford as a Trustee.

A highly respected political activist, social justice advocate, and champion of racial equality, Lord Woolley brings a wealth of experience in civic engagement and community empowerment to the Foundation’s mission of making music education accessible to children worldwide.

Lord Simon Woolley:

“I am delighted to be part of the Lang Lang Music Foundation and admire its innovative approach towards teaching disadvantaged children the magic of the piano, including reading, playing, and expressing music. It is something that the foundation does at the highest level and I look forward to working with a dynamic and diverse board.”

Simon Woolley became Principal of Homerton College, University of Cambridge on 1 October 2021. As the founder and director of Operation Black Vote (OBV), Lord Woolley has dedicated his career to amplifying the voices of Black and minority ethnic communities in the UK.

Since 1996, OBV has played a pivotal role in increasing voter registration, political participation, and representation among underrepresented groups, fostering greater inclusivity in public life. His leadership in advancing racial and social equality has earned him numerous accolades, including a knighthood in 2019 and a life peerage in the House of Lords in 2021.

Lord Woolley’s commitment to education as a tool for empowerment aligns seamlessly with LLIMF’s vision. The Foundation, established by world-renowned pianist Lang Lang, is dedicated to integrating high-quality music education into schools, particularly those in underserved communities. Through programmes like Keys of Inspiration®, LLIMF nurtures young learners’ creativity, confidence, and emotional resilience, recognising music’s power to drive social change.

Lang Lang, founder of LLIMF:

“Simon Woolley’s lifelong commitment to equality and opportunity makes him a tremendous addition to our team. His passion for empowering young people aligns perfectly with our belief that music education is a fundamental right, not a privilege. We are thrilled to have him join our mission.”

Lord Woolley’s appointment comes at a crucial time as LLIMF expands its reach in the UK and US working alongside educators, policymakers, and community leaders to ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music.
