Telly picks for the coming week…

Dave Gorman’s Modern Life Is Goodish

Stand-up comedian Dave Gorman returns to U&Dave after a seven-year hiatus with the critically acclaimed and ratings hit, Dave Gorman: Modern Life Is Goodish.

Armed with a computer, clicker and checked shirt, Dave casts an eye over modern life in his own unique style combining stand-up, visual storytelling, and real-world experimentation. In these mischievous comedy performances, Dave turns his attention to the areas of everyday life we normally take for granted- scrutinising the absurdities and contradictions that continue to fascinate and infuriate him.

In this week’s edition – the third of the six-part series – Dave Gorman’s inquisitive mind takes on more quirks of modern life in the episode entitled ‘Britain is Also an Island’ featuring a look at AI, honesty in TV, leaving London and notions of ‘celebrity’ all get the Goodish treatment.

Candy: A Death in Texas

The five part series begins tonight with a double-bill outing. This acclaimed true crime drama series stars Jessica Biel, Melanie Lynskey and Pablo Schreiber, and is based on the shocking real-life story of an apparently ordinary suburban housewife and the grisly killing that shattered a small Texas town in 1980.

The series shines a light on the stunning chain of events that led Candy Montgomery (Biel) – a churchgoing mother of two with a loving husband and a beautiful suburban home – to kill her friend Betty Gore (Lynskey) with an axe. In the opening episode, a regular day in Candy’s life is interrupted by an alluring incident. Elsewhere, Allan Gore (Schreiber), who’s away on business, tries to reach his absent wife Betty.

In the second episode, two years before the incident, Candy and Betty are shocked when their beloved pastor Jackie (Selena Anduze) announces her divorce. Betty takes in a troubled foster child, while Candy ponders her own love life.

The Johnathan Ross Show

On The Jonathan Ross Show this week, Jonathan is joined by Warwick Davis fresh from receiving the BAFTA Fellowship Award, Ashley Walters, Jodie Whittaker and Daisy May Cooper, plus former BRIT award nominated rock band Nova Twins will be performing live in the studio.

Recounting the moment he found out he won the BAFTA gong, Warwick Davis says, “I was on the toilet – I always check my email on the toilet. I got very excited when they said they were awarding me the fellowship. I screamed with delight from the toilet so my daughter thought ‘oh he’s relieved his constipation’. They ran in before I’d finished the paperwork.”

Jonathan asks Warwick about his moving speech and when he references his wife who passed away last year,

“When you go through your career as an actor, you sometimes become a bit reluctant to do certain jobs thinking another one will come along and be a bit better. She would always say ‘get out there and do it’. She was great at networking as well, always talking to producers and getting me the work in the next job. Very supportive. You need that in this business because it is difficult. You’ve got to have someone who is very supportive of you being away on occasions and working ridiculous hours. … Acting is quite a lonely career, really. You need a solid foundation at home to support that and make it work.”

Harry and Meghan: American Nightmare?

Has America turned on the Sussexes? Once darlings of the American people, how has it all gone so horribly wrong? And what is the truth behind the devastating allegations against Meghan?

Are they grifters? Are they bullies? Will they sell anyone out for a dollar? Are they only out for themselves?

Since moving to California, Harry and Meghan have been seen as the ultimate power couple: philanthropists, entrepreneurs, activists and content makers. If you walked into any supermarket in the States you would see dozens of photographs of Meghan smiling from the front pages of celebrity magazines. The US media has been enthralled by her. It was thought Meghan was living the ultimate fairytale – after marrying her British Prince.

But in recent times has the mood in the US changed towards her?

Harry and Meghan were condemned for being “disaster tourists” in the wake of the Los Angeles Fires and the new President – Donald Trump has also been vocal in his criticism… and even previously threatened to deport him in the past.

Dancing Back to the Light

In October 2019, Steven McRae, acclaimed by critics as one of the most talented dancers of his generation and a ‘semi-god’ at the top of the ballet world, is in the middle of a live performance at the Royal Opera House when his Achilles tendon ruptures.

It’s a catastrophic injury and no one knows if Steven, who is a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, London, will ever dance again. If he does return, there’s no guarantee he will be able to stay on stage for an entire season: either he fully recovers, or his career is over at the age of 35.

Over the course of a year Director Stéphane Carrel films Steven as he struggles to return to his company, witnessing the ups and downs of his rehabilitation and his determination to tackle taboos around injury and mental health in the dance world. It’s a journey into the demanding world of dance and the daily life of a man fighting, both physically and mentally, to regain control of his destiny.
