The Channel 5 series ‘Supermarket Own Brands: Big Taste Test’ continues this evening…

Sweet or Savoury? tonight Channel 5 have all got our favourites, and this week it is all about cakes and bakes. It’s probably the own brands toughest challenge yet.

With the like of Mr Kipling and Krispy Kreme, it’s hard to imagine the own brands even having a chance. The world of cakes and bakes has evolved in recent years; it’s not about an iced bun or a slice of Battenberg anymore. Instead, brands like Crosstown and Café Concerto are producing fancy treats that will have you salivating at the sight of them. But, they have price tags to match.

So how can a doughnut bought from the shelves of the supermarkets compete with the might of Krispy Kreme? And what about an own brand vegan sausage roll up against the now famed Greggs vegan sausage roll?

It’s a tall order but the own brands like nothing more than coming up with a surprise or two and saving us a few pounds in the pocket.

Lidl’s bakery has become a phenomenon, and people are flocking there in their droves to sample the baked goods. Lifestyle vlogger Sochima is joined by a panel of ordinary punters to see if they can spot the brands from the own brands and tell us which they prefer. Is it time for Mr Kipling to hang up his oven gloves or have the own brands bitten off more than they can chew?

Also in this evening’s show a few surprising tricks the supermarkets have up their sleeves to help keep the cost down.
